Diary: BONIIK & The Face Shop Sydney Brand Ambassador

Event Boniik Sydney The Face Shop Kbeauty Blogger Ambassador Night

We don’t have many kbeauty sources here in Sydney, or our selection in general can be rather small in comparison to other countries, so you can imagine my excitement for this! I was recently chosen as one of the new Brand Ambassadors for The Face Shop Sydney/BONIIK and we had a welcome night around two weeks ago – and it was so good. I wanted to write this post before I left for US/Canada but time hasn’t been on my side, so here I am finishing it in my Montreal hotel.

The Face Shop Sydney specifically is very close to my heart. Years ago when I first got into Korean beauty, we only have extremely limited choices here in Sydney and I didn’t shop online back then either. From their store, I got my first bb cream (the Power Perfection) and my first HG eyeliner (there was a gel liner crayon that lasted really well on my eyes). I don’t use either of these products anymore, but it’s still a significant part of my beauty journey.

The BONIIK store, on my other hand, was opened recently by the same people. Meeting the manager, she explained that this store (which carries a wide range of different brands and products, ranging from smaller brands like 23 Years Old to high end brands like Hera) came to fruition as a response to changes in how people view beauty now – in the past, people wanted to be loyal to a single brand and would buy everything from the same line, hence the popularity of one brand stores. However, people are now more interested in trying different products and exploring their options.

For that, I can definitely agree. I love walking into stores that have a large range of products and, even when I find something that I love, I’m always on the look out to see if I’ll find something that I love more. On this note, I think that BONIIK has definitely hit the spot and I’m excited to show you more photos of the store! Of course, if you’re not based in Australia, you can also shop their range online so check that out too – click here.

The night took place at the BONIIK store in Sydney, Town Hall (Shop 42G Westfield Pitt Street Mall (under Myer)) and it was so lovely! They had a bunch of cupcakes and drinks ready to greet us and, while we were waiting for everyone to arrive, I also took a look around the store.

I’ve been there before, so it wasn’t all new to me, but it was still good to get a closer look at everything they carried (and they have a massive range), as well as to chat with some of the other influencers about their favourites and what they were keen to try out in the future.

The layout of the store is pretty simple with one side full of skincare and the other full of make up. Generally, I am most drawn towards the make up side – because I just love collecting them and I feel like there’s a limit to how much skincare I can use vs how much make up I can wear. Still, for that night, I still focussed more of my attention on their skin range because I know that most kbeauty fans prefer that.

As you can see in the photos, they have a good range of brands that they carry. Although they can be a bit expensive in comparison to some of the direct-from-Korea online stores, physical stores will always have more costs to cover and I think that BONIIK makes up for that with great service and range. This isn’t a store that you’ll go to to find common brands like Etude House (although they do carry a few roadshop brands like Innisfree depending on popularity and quality), but one where you’ll finally be able to test out some less widely available products, usually from smaller, indie brands!

They carry brands like COSRX, KLAVUU, Huxley, Neogen and – most excitingly – J.One as well! I’ve been keen to try out that brand since seeing it on Instagram. I’m a massive fan of Ha Ji Won (an actress and the founder of the brand) and I’ve heard great reviews of their products. I think that they are carried in Sephora in the US (maybe) but I have not found them in any Australian stores before now. Even online, I am often having difficulty finding a place that carries a decent range.

The BONIIK store is actually the first place that I got to try out the super hyped J.One Jelly Mask, and I did end up grabbing that. I’m still testing it out, as the weather hasn’t been quite right to use it, but I’m hoping to see more from the brand in the future.

This Neogen Ocean Feeding Cream had such an interesting gel-like texture that a couple of us just stopped to try it for a while. I think that with the hotter seasons when my skin is more oily, this would be a good one to try out in the future. Since I’m going overseas (where it’s cold) and I’m currently trying to finish a few more of my current products, I think that I’ll wait a while to try this one out.

There’s also a range of other products that were placed on the tables. These are probably less prominent indie brands that have a smaller range but are still worth checking out. At the store, I got to chat with the BONIIK manager about my skin concerns (whitening, primarily) and got some recommendations for what to try out. Other influencers with different concerns (ranging from anti-aging to hydrating) also got recommendations for their own skin and we discussed the strengths of each brand, what our routine consists of and what ingredients were used. Overall, the manager definitely knew what she was talking about and it’s really great to chat with someone who actually loves and understands skincare.

For myself, my primary skin concern right now is whitening. I’ve noticed some freckles and sunspots coming up, in particular under my eyes, and although they’re still faint, I really want to deal with them before it becomes an actual issue. Since I am also genetically inclined towards getting dark spots, I’m really conscious of taking preventative measures now.

The BONIIK manager recommended to me a product from 23 Years Old called the C-Tragel Cream. This is a spot treatment to target pigmentation in skin and it also uses gentler ingredients than the average whitening cream, meaning that it isn’t so harsh on your skin and won’t lead to sensitivity or thinning (i.e. wrinkles). I was also introduced to KLAVUU, which is very popular and also does whitening products, but she recommended this cream over it as KLAVUU is generally used as an overall treatment (and so isn’t as strong) while the C-Tragel is designed as a spot treatment.

From the event, I got to take home a few products and also to pick something from BONIIK to test out – they explained that we were given the opportunity to choose ourselves because it would be best for us to find something best suited to our skin. Naturally, I was completely sold on this C-Tragel Cream and I picked it immediately. I also went to check out their range of make up and, although I didn’t pick up anything else yet, I was really surprised by their range from Moonshot! In general, I find that this brand is a bit harder to get outside of Korea – even though they’re pretty popular!

These jelly pots are the most fun product in their range! I actually have a couple of them at home and it’s been very tempting to collect them all. However, it’s important to note that these do dry out very easily and even the BONIIK testers were super dry – it’s a shame because I was raving to the other influencers about how interesting this jelly texture is. If you have these or you’re planning on buying them, make sure that you close the lid really tightly! It’s possible to rehydrate them with saline, but the texture just isn’t the same.

Speaking of make up though, I love that the BONIIK store also have this beauty corner set up on that side of the room where they have a bunch of testers and brushes (as well as sanitising sprays) so that you can swatch and try out everything. While it’s easy to just look at a product and try it on your hand, I really believe that you won’t fully know something until you use it the way that it’s supposed to be used! There are also some spare cushion puffs in the store for you to try out cushions and find your shade.

And here’s our group photo! It was so good to be at the event and to meet everyone. The Sydney beauty community can seem so small and quiet at times that we often don’t realise how many of us are around (and how great it is to chat with people who understand our love for skincare and make up). I’ve definitely kept in contact with them and hopefully will see more of everyone around now.

It was also so great to meet the people working behind BONIIK and The Face Shop Sydney, to see their passion and love for what they do and enthusiasm to push their brand further. For those who are in Sydney, I highly recommend going to check out their store but otherwise, they also have an online store that you can check out – free shipping above AUD$70 (or AUD$40 for their current Mothers Day promotion).

Thank you again to the people at BONIIK and The Face Shop for this opportunity and I hope to promote their store more in the future as their brand ambassador. Look forward to some upcoming content from me – haul and review posts, and videos!
