Review: Select Fairy – Street Brown (Pinkicon)

Pinkicon Pink Icon Contact Lenses Review Select Fairy Street Brown

Did you know that I’ve never actually worn one-day lenses before? All of the ones I’ve worn have been 3 – 6 month pairs because I always feel like it’s such a waste to throw them out after a single use (and the prices seem to add up). However, I was recently approached by a Hong Kong company called Pinkicon to try out a pair of their lenses and I decided to give the one-day set a go – partly because I was really curious about how these would differ from my long lasting ones, and also because I’ve never really worn brown contacts before! I often like bright, stand out colours that differ a lot from my original eyecolour, so I was interested to see how a subtle change would change my overall look.

These are from the Fairy brand by Sincere-Vision, a Japanese brand that seems to be really popular. Their Select range is, I guess, a selection of their best colours? These lenses are meant to give only a subtle moderate widening of the eyes (as they have a more natural radius) and the subtle colour is meant to add dimension to your iris, giving you a soft ‘dewy’ look. They’re super pretty and available on Pinkicon’s website for USD$20 for a pack of 10 (or 5 pairs)!

Now let’s move onto the review!

These contacts come in a simple, flat box. I really love the typography and design of the packaging, which is really feminine but not overly ornate. The box is pretty basic, so it’s not super sturdy but it’s sufficient for what it is. Shipping from Pinkicon was pretty simple and the products arrived very safely – no difficulties there.

Please note that, unlike any monthly contacts, these contacts arrive packaged individually (as in each lens is sealed – you will see below) and don’t come with lens cases. This confused me at first until, of course, I realised it. You don’t need to use cases or even lens solution for one-day contacts which is definitely a benefit. For people who are on the go and only like to fiddle around with washing their contacts and carrying plastic cases, this is definitely for you.

Since Pinkicon is Hong Kong based, they have a sticker over the Japanese information in Chinese – which will be great for Chinese readers. Although I can speak Cantonese, I am unfortunately Chinese illiterate, so I relied on their website and other online resources for my information. It’s really nice to know that they sort of ‘repackage’ these to take into consideration their audience though and I’ll give them props for that!

There are the details below. I have mine in a 0.00 power and these have a base curvature of 8.7 (admittedly, that means nothing to me… sorry! The website does say that it’s meant to be more comfortable on the eyes though). The graphic diameter is 13.5 but the actual lens diameter is 14.2, which gives you a very natural look. They are also really easy to pop in because they’re not too wide.

See the above photos! These lenses arrive all in separate packets which can be pulled apart. They’re really tightly sealed and very hygenic so I actually quite like this packaging. I like that they can also be separated so if I am going out later in the day and I don’t want to wear my lenses all day (which I usually don’t – nap time on the train is much too important for me and I work in front of a computer all day; even mascara gets annoying sometimes), I can just throw a pair into my handbags.

Things to keep in mind that I recently learnt:

  • One-day lenses are thinner and more comfortable in your eyes – even more comfortable than my most comfortable lenses.
  • These are softer so I found them a bit harder to put in than my monthly pairs.
  • One-day lenses should not be placed in normal eye contact solution so please don’t try to save them by putting them into a lens case in normal solution – this will destroy them and aren’t good for your eyes.
  • The Fairy lenses use a sandwich method, meaning that the colourants do not come in contact with your cornea or eyelid.
  • The lenses are non-ionic meaning that dirt is not as easily attracted to the lenses and pollen will also not adhere as easily – which is perfect for hayfever sufferers like myself!
  • These lenses have a low water content of 38%, so they are more comfortable in the long run and your eyes are less likely to dry out (which is also good for me as my eyes often dry out from fatigue).

Now, with all of those facts out of the way – let’s check out the lenses! I have paired them with a clean, autumn inspired make up look that I recently filmed a tutorial for. The key is a faded red lip, brown/bronze eyes and clean, elongated liner!

Here’s the verdict!

SO WHAT IS IT?

Comfortable and natural brown one-day lenses

THE GOOD

  • Reliable and safe shipping
  • Super comfortable (I needed to be reminded to take them out)
  • Subtle enlargement and a natural look suitable for every day
  • Easy to carry around
  • Low water content and non-ionic (For us hayfever kids)
  • No need for lens kits/solutions
  • Very hygenic and minimises chance of bateria infection (from dirty lenses)

THE BAD

  • You must throw them out at the end of the day so cost might add up

WOULD I REPURCHASE?

I really liked these and I can see why the majority of people in Asia wear one-day lenses! Asian beauty trends often make great use of coloured contacts to really complete the look and, considering how often people wear them, comfort and hygiene is definitely the most important. I’m really interested in trying other colours from the Fairy brand so I am definitely interested in repurchasing and would recommend!

HELPFUL TIP

Although they are softer and maybe a little harder to put in, I would definitely recommend one-day lenses for people who are just beginning to wear contacts. They’re really comfortable and feel like absolutely nothing in. Since they are disposable, it also means you are less likely to make a mistake (or forget) to clean them properly. Try these out if you’re a newbie (or an oldie who appreciates a comfortable lens).
