Yuni Beauty is a brand that I’ve worked with a few times since being introduced to them last year. I actually met a member of their team at a Sephora Showcase and they quickly won me over with their passion for sustainability and also creating beauty products for active (and fast paced) lifestyles. I’ve used a good handful of their products already and I’ve definitely had some great experiences.
Recently, I had the opportunity to ask a few questions to their co-founder, Emmanuel Ray, both about the brand and some of the amazing things that they release. Read on for my interview with him where he discusses the history of Yuni Beauty, the story behind one of their most famous products and what new goodies are in store.

I first collaborated with BONIIK last year when they were a relatively new store in Australia, and wanted to introduce their brand to a bunch of us beauty bloggers. I’m really happy to say that I will be working with them again in the year of 2019 and, just before I left for Vietnam, I was invited to visit their new store at World Square (Sydney CBD) where I discussed with them my ambitions as a beauty content creator, my skin type and also got recommendations of new products to try out.

When I first became interested in k-beauty, I swore by BB cream – I wasn’t fully sure how different it was, because I was around fifteen at the time and had only ever used one cakey pot of mousse foundation, but there were all of these promises about how it improves your skin and how it’s so far superior. The popularity of the product really skyrocketed a few years later when kpop started to spread internationally and everyone was trying to get that flawless idol complexion – “Slather on the BB cream,” people used to tell me.
It’s been years since then and, as I’ve mentioned a lot, I actually started to use foundation a lot more than BB cream. This is primarily because I’ve been more focused on the cosmetic side of things and I wanted something that has a specific finish (lightweight and matte) that was more difficult to find in a BB cream. Because of this, I’ve become very familiar with both of the products – foundation, BB cream and even CC cream (which we’ll discuss at another point).
With the relaunch of the original, holy grail Skin79 BB Creams at StyleStory, I really wanted to delve back into this world and once again share with people the glory of BB creams and why the product became so popular to begin with. I realised that a lot of people still don’t really know what the difference between them is, aside from one claiming to be better, so it really raises the question – Which should I use? Which is better for my skin type?
So, today’s post is going to be a little bit different! I’ll be chatting to you guys about the Skin79 BB Creams (which StyleStory generously sent over to me to help out with this post) but, rather than a review, I’ll be explaining the differences between it and a traditional foundation. We don’t have many kbeauty sources here in Sydney, or our selection in general can be rather small in comparison to other countries, so you can imagine my excitement for this! I was recently chosen as one of the new Brand Ambassadors for The Face Shop Sydney/BONIIK and we had a welcome night around two weeks ago – and it was so good. I wanted to write this post before I left for US/Canada but time hasn’t been on my side, so here I am finishing it in my Montreal hotel.
The Face Shop Sydney specifically is very close to my heart. Years ago when I first got into Korean beauty, we only have extremely limited choices here in Sydney and I didn’t shop online back then either. From their store, I got my first bb cream (the Power Perfection) and my first HG eyeliner (there was a gel liner crayon that lasted really well on my eyes). I don’t use either of these products anymore, but it’s still a significant part of my beauty journey.
The BONIIK store, on my other hand, was opened recently by the same people. Meeting the manager, she explained that this store (which carries a wide range of different brands and products, ranging from smaller brands like 23 Years Old to high end brands like Hera) came to fruition as a response to changes in how people view beauty now – in the past, people wanted to be loyal to a single brand and would buy everything from the same line, hence the popularity of one brand stores. However, people are now more interested in trying different products and exploring their options.
For that, I can definitely agree. I love walking into stores that have a large range of products and, even when I find something that I love, I’m always on the look out to see if I’ll find something that I love more. On this note, I think that BONIIK has definitely hit the spot and I’m excited to show you more photos of the store! I found out about the Myer Masterclasses on Instagram via Tina Yong‘s Instagram – where she advertised that she would be holding some lessons at the department store that is close-ish to my work place. I really didn’t want to miss out on these, partly because I’m a big fan of her videos (and I’ve been binge watching the Tina Tries It series pretty often) and also because the prices were pretty good.
In addition to this class with Tina, I also chose to attend two other masterclasses with another two brands – YSL, which was on the same day, and MAC Cosmetics, which is next week. The brand masterclasses were AUD$25 each and the lesson with Tina Yong was AUD$50 – both of these classes also include gifts from the brands which more than make up for the cost of the seat.
Both of these classes have different topics. For Tina’s class, it was mainly about easy and useable daily make up tips (focusing on a fresh and radiant look) which are suitable for people on the go. I ended up attending these class with two of my friends but I went to the YSL class alone – this was more about night time make up and introduced a lot of the YSL brand (and I love their brand).
With the new year coming really, really close, it seems like it’s time for me to finish up my list of top skincare products for the year too! Skincare is an absolutely essential part of a beauty regime and it took spending quite a while in Korea for me to really jump on board of this. Let’s get real here: make up gives you instant results. With the right skills, you can completely transform your look, hide your flaws, in a matter of minutes. There is a reason I tend to review make up more than skincare – it’s faster and I’m impatient.
However, it is important to keep in mind that skincare is not an overnight thing. It is a dedicated regime that improves and protects your complexion continuously. After all, good skin doesn’t wipe off with a baby wipe.
Keeping that in mind, you can actually argue that skincare is more important that make up – and most people believe that. I’m not here to debate though and, instead, I’m going to be showing you the products I’ve used with dedication through this year. These are all things that I love, will be taking with me to 2017 and hope will help you too when you go to check them out. Read on!
With the new year slowly approaching, it seems only appropriate to do a wrap up post! I’ll be (hoping) to do two of these, so first up is my Makeup post! In my first year of blogging, I realised that I like to test out make up products more than I do skincare – even though I am an absolute geek for a thorough and well considered skincare routine. Perhaps this is because I’m not a very patient person and I like something where I can see results right away. In addition, I do wear quite a bit of make up every day of the week for work, so finding the perfect products is really important to me. I am someone with rather temperamental skin conditions (sometimes very oily and sometimes ridiculously dry) and sensitive eyes, so I am quite strict sometimes on the products that I love and I don’t.
For this reason, I am sometimes a bit of a stickler for brand choices. My brand choices for this year have mainly centred about long-lasting power, high pigmentation and my beloved dewy finishes. Clio remains on top as one of my favourites, with 3CE being a very strong contender in some areas and LUNA being a surprising – but not that surprising – new obsession of mine.
