New Release: Petal Velvet Sunaway & Powder (Althea)

Althea Petal Velvet Sunaway Kbeauty Sunscreen Review

These products were provided to me by Althea for my honest review. Affiliate links are not used in this post.

Note: I have been notified that Althea has made a correction to the ingredients of this product. Due to mistranslations, Hyaluronic Acid was included in the ingredients list of the Sunaway, but this ingredient was not used in the development of this product. This review has been amended for this.

I am a firm, firm believer in the importance of using sun protection and it’s pretty rare for me to go out without it (although whether or not I use SPF on my body is another question – one which I should fix up). At the moment, I have three sunscreens on rotation in my routine: one which is a staple HG product and the other two which I tried out recently.

Being a part of the Althea Angels community, one of the biggest benefits is that we get access to information about new releases (and sometimes the actual products) before the launch date and I was pretty excited when they announced their news sunscreen! This is meant to be both hydrating and with sebum control properties, so it really fits in perfectly to what I usually look for in SPF.

I have tried out this product, the Petal Velvet Sunaway, for a handful of weeks now and I have to say that I’m pretty satisfied with this product! It is also very affordable at USD$10 on their website – which is always a benefit. In the same range, there is also the Petal Velvet Powder, which I will touch on briefly as they are available in a set for USD$13 – 10% off the retail price.

So, let’s get right into this review/new release post!

The Range

This is a new addition to Althea brand’s Petal Velvet range, which is all about the soft, velvet like matte finish. The products contain “micro-powder particles that give you a smooth, petal-like complexion.” They originally started with the Petal Velvet Powder, which is currently available in three shades (one of which is a limited edition release with added benefits) and extended this line with their new Petal Velvet Sunaway.

I have actually already been using the Petal Velvet Powder before I received this package (and hence had a few of them as back ups now) and I actually quite like it, so I was keen to see how the new sunscreen would fit into the mix. Being part of Althea’s exclusive brand, they are also very affordable while also been good quality.

Petal Velvet Sunaway | USD$10 for 55mL

So let’s talk about the new sunscreen first! As you obviously know, this is their Petal Velvet Sunaway, a super lightweight sunscreen that claims to keep skin feeling hydrated and protected all day, with zero white cast or streakiness. The micro-powder particles in it also gives your skin a smooth, petal-like complexion.

This product contains three key ingredients:

  • Damask rose extract: Deeply hydrating and soothes irritations, leaving the skin feeling healthy
  • Hyaluronic acid: A humectant that attracts moisture to the skin, preventing dehydration
  • Geranium oil: Gives the skin a radiant boost and heals acne

Naturally, Hyaluronic Acid is my personal favourite (and I would gladly use it in any form I can) but I also quite like rose extract, which is very hydrating on skin and has a beautiful scent. The Geranium oil in this product, which claims to heal acne, is an added bonus for me as I have been getting persistent break outs lately.

In addition, it would be good to note that this is a non-chemical formula, which means it creates the sunscreen filter on the surface of skin. Aside from being gentle on sensitive skin, this also (from what I know) minimises the risk of dark spots or skin pigmentation. It is also cruelty free.

The packaging for this product is so simple but I love it. The product comes in a basic pink box, with an elegant and feminine design and a matte finish. Opening it up, the sunscreen has a white and pink bottle, lightweight and plastic but with a good quality feel. I like that this product looks very modern and cute, while still maintaining that quality and the simplicity of design. Overall, it definitely looks more expensive than it actually is.

The Petal Velvet Sunaway comes in a 55mL bottle which is small and suitable for travel use, though easy to decant if you want something even lighter. The pink cap twists off and also clicks in place, locking it in so it it is safe in your bag and will minimise any spillage.

As this product has a very watery consistency (which I will discuss further below), it needs to be shaken well before use. The bottle has a little ball inside of it, much like the MAC Fix+ bottles or nail polish, to help the product combine better. If you want to get a ‘clean’ dispense, it is best to hold the bottle pointing vertically.

Overall, I am very happy with the packaging and I also find it easy to dispense. My only complaint would be that the bottle can create a mess if you try to dispense it without shaking, but I guess the only way to counteract that would be to have a pump and that would make it bulkier. It isn’t too big of an issue.

Application & Formula

As I previously mentioned, this product has a very watery consistency and it has a tendency to settle and seperate. It has to be shaken up before use, but I don’t mind that too much. This lightweight consistency helps the Petal Velvet Sunaway to absorb into the skin, leaving a soft matte finish that feels like absolutely nothing. There is so stickiness on the skin and, albeit a little more work, i much prefer these sort of formulas.

It is suitable for all skin types but I think that those with combination or oily skin will especially love the finish of this.

The product has very minimal white cast. Although it evens out my skin tone a bit, you can’t really notice that I have it on. It also has a very light rose scent, though it does take a moment to fade so I would be more cautious if sensitive to that.

It wears well underneath make up and does not affect any products (like primers or concealers too) that are layered on top.

I’m pretty happy with this sunscreen and I’ll be continuing to use it in my daily routine. I have three that I’m using at the moment, which I mentioned at the start, and this sunscreen is falling just under my HG Biore product for me! It is more affordable and easier to buy too (since Althea ships to most countries and – for Americans – ships free to the US on orders over $50) so I will very likely be repurchasing this. I find it impossible to find the Biore one for a decent price here so this is a great alternative.

So, here’s my verdict!

A lightweight sunscreen with hydrating properties

  • PRICE POINT | 5/5
  • PACKAGING | 4/5
  • SCENT | 4/5
  • HYDRATION | 4/5
  • ABSORPTION | 5/5
  • NO CAST | 4/5

THOUGHTS? I will be very likely repurchasing the Petal Velvet Sunaway in the future – the formula is really close to perfect for me, and the great price is a big benefit. I would also be recommending this to people as well, especially for those who want something that is lightweight, absorbs well and has a matte finish (rather than something overly creamy and moisturising). I think it is especially suitable for those with combination or oily skin, or those who wear make up and want something that won’t affect base make up.

Petal Velvet Powder
| USD$4.50 for 3g

This Petal Velvet Powder is actually the first product that they released under the Althea brand and, honestly, it is a good one! I’ve been using this every day as a setting powder so it is definitely a favourite of mine (and with that price point, I would happily be buying more).

This product claims to help control sebum with a translucent finish and a micro-fine texture that helps to fill out and smooth pores as well. It is also non-comedogenic, using natural ingredients from Korea.

According to the official product description: “This debuting beauty is a translucent powder that sets makeup and leaves behind a silky finish to the touch. Infused with oil from Althea seeds, this powder works to keep sebum production at bay without drying out the skin for a radiant, fresh look, all while giving out a gentle scent. Keep your makeup looking great all day or dust some on to stay shine-free!”

Key ingredients are:

  • Althea seed extract: rich in antioxidants, protecting the skin from externalities and ensuring it stays nice and hydrated.
  • Polyphenols: Keeps the skin protected from UV rays
  • Saponarin: Repairs damaged cells and restores elasticity to aging skin

This Petal Velvet Powder is currently available in three shades (usually it is two but there is one limited edition version too at the moment): the translucent (#0), warm beige (#23) and Pink Lavender – the latter which is a bit more expensive at USD$5 because of the added pigmentation and some differences in the skin benefits.

Personal Experiences

I am currently using the Pink Lavender version and have the others on back up because I don’t want to have too many of them open at once. From my experience though, I really love this setting powder – it is definitely one of the better ones that I’ve used. It sets make up really well, leaving you with a flawless finish, but doesn’t feel powdery or heavy on the skin. It’s almost like a filter.

Also, the Petal Velvet Powder isn’t drying on the skin at all, though I don’t see how it is particularly hydrating either. It does give you a very fresh look though and, while it mattifies skin, still keeps it looking natural and radiant. It claims to have a gentle scent but I don’t really notice it.

The only downside to this product is that it doesn’t last all day and, by around noon, my oils are peeking through. Since it is a loose powder, it’s very difficult to carry around so I hope that they release a pressed version soon too (hint hint)!

So, here’s the verdict!

A super fine loose setting powder

  • PRICE POINT | 5/5
  • PACKAGING | 4/5 (I want a pressed version too so I stole a point)
  • SCENT | 5/5 (Little to none)
  • FINISH | 5/5
  • LONGEVITY | 3/5

THOUGHTS? This product only really lost some points in longevity and the packaging, because I would really like a pressed version where I can carry it around for touch ups (but don’t get rid of the loose form, because they are my favourite). I love the finish of it and I find myself reaching for it every day because it really perfects my complexion.

As for the translucency of this product, I can only speak for the Pink Lavender version – it is meant to be brightening, but I actually find that it has no noticeable colour on my skin and matches me perfectly.

I would recommend this shade or the white (#0) for pale skin tones or the Warm Beige (#23) or medium to deeper skin types – the one I have looks too dark for me so I will have to give it away.

The Petal Velvet Set

Separately, these are both products that I would recommend but – for a limited time (I think) – they are actually getting in a special duo set. I usually use them both in my make up and skincare routine and I think that they could be essentials to acing your make up base. If you don’t wear much make up, then using these two alone is enough to give you flawlessly smooth (and protected) skin.

The Petal Velvet Set is selling for USD$13 (10% off the usual price) and you can pick from any of the three variations. I’m not sure how long this deal will be around for though so jump right on. Alternatively, you can also purchase the Sunaway or Powder individually.
