Review: Platinum Green/Silver Facial Mask Kit (Double Dare)

Double Dare OMG Mask StyleKorean Kbeauty Review

This product was sent to me by StyleKorean for review purposes. I was not paid for this post but please note that affiliate links are used on my blog. These go towards supporting Oh My Stellar and future content.

The Double Dare brand is a new one to StyleKorean and I was lucky enough to be sent over a couple of items so I could try them out and give my thoughts. I did get a big mask kit from them as well, which is actually a bit more exciting, but I wanted to write about these first because they’re faster to test out and gather my thoughts. This is a brand that I haven’t heard about before and, from what I can see, it seems that they are focusing on masking products – detoxers, peel offs, exfoliants etc. According to them, “All of our products were designed to nourish an adventurous spirit, and fuel a passion for discovery and innovation. Dare to discover a new way to think about looking and feeling beautiful with Double Dare.”

This is the Facial Mask Kit which is a three step detoxing mask, with the biggest selling point being the pretty chrome finish of the peel off mask. This is part of the OMG! Platinum Collection and is available in four different colours, but I will be showing the two that I have – the Platinum Green and Platinum Silver – primarily the green variant as I am saving the silver one for an IG Live video.

Being a three step mask kit, these are single use only and sell for USD$8.50 – they aren’t cheap in comparison to standard sheet masks, but are unique enough to justify the price. They’re not exorbitant either so, to be honest, I would buy it just to try it out. Anyway, let’s get into this review!

Product Description

According to the StyleKorean website, this OMG! Platinum Collection was created to “fuse skincare as fashion into one” – which I personally think is a bit of a strange claim, but it basically talks about the aesthetic value of the mask. It is really fun though and I think that I would buy them (or give them to people) just for the novelty of it.

Moving onto the skincare benefits though, these are three step masks that aim to detox and also hydrate your skin. This detoxifying mask using Apple and Methyl Perfluorobutyl, which is a common ingredient for bubbling masks (read here).  The first step is a bubbling detox mask, which can be used with or without make up. You then apply then peel off mask for approximately half an hour, which will help to ‘revive your complexion’ and essentially clear out pores. The final step is a serum pad that both hydrates skin and helps to remove any mask residue.

There are also some slight differences between the four different colours, primarily the ingredients in the second and first step:

Platinum Green

  • Step Two: Chlorella (sebum control) and Laminaria Japonica (antioxidant)
  • Step Three: Hydrolyzed Collagen (moisturise) and Lavender (soothing)

Platinum Silver

  • Step Two: Diamond (revitalizing), Pearl (brightening) and Camellia Sinensis Leaf extract (revitalizing)
  • Step Three: Hydrolyzed Collagen (moisturise), Lavender (soothing) and Grapefruit Peel (brightening)

Platinum Purple*

  • Step Two: Blueberry (revitalizing) and Blackberry (antioxidant)
  • Step Three: Hydrolyzed Collagen (moisturise) and Lavender (soothing)

Platinum Hot Pink*

  • Step Two: Rose Centifolia (soothing) and Pelargonium (soothing)
  • Step Three: Hydrolyzed Collagen (moisturise) and Lavender (soothing)

* the ingredients for these were taken from the StyleKorean website images and not the proper packaging so may not be 100% accurate

Application (Step-by-Step)

Here’s some (awkward) photos of myself going through the three step process and a few notes on the application process:

Step one: Detox Bubbling Mask

This mask applies much like a standard sheet mask but, as soon as I pulled it out, I could see that the product on it was foamy. Once applied, and perhaps in presence of air, it foams up fairly quickly. The instructions say to leave it on for 1-3 minutes, though I may have left it longer in trying to get photos. Once it is taken off, the remaining froth needs to be washed off.

Surprisingly, my skin felt really good afterwards. It felt brightened and very clean, but with no drying or stripping of the skin. The process can be a bit messy though, considering that I now have foam all over my door handle.

Step two: Peel Off Mask

This is the most exciting step and, seriously, this chrome finish mask is so pretty! It is a gel, liquid formula that is applied over the skin. It would recommend to get the product as even as possible – you don’t want it to be too thin, but if it is too thick then you will have issues waiting for it to dry. The mask is a little bit messy to apply and I ended up with it stuck under my nails, so I would recommend using a mask brush.

I waited around half an hour for it to dry. They do say 20-30 minutes, but I find that it takes a while. The mask is easy to peel off and, though it can be a little painful if you get too close to the eyes (and hair… please avoid both), it is relatively gentle in comparison to others. It leaves skin feeling really fresh and smooth. I also noticed that there are some hydrating ingredients in this mask too which, also surprisingly, is quite evident!

Step three: Serum Pad

This serum pad is probably the most average step here, although it does a good job to rebalancing and hydrating skin (and well as removing excess mask, which I did have a lot of). It is very similar to the daily moisture pads that I used, but obviously packaged as a single. I feel like this step could easily be replaced by toner and a cotton pad, so I find it quite redundant in the pack. It is also the least ‘innovative’ out of the three, though I do like that it’s a fast and simple way to finish off the treatment.

Thoughts

I felt that this was a very good mask for detoxing and clearing of the pores (as well as a good exfoliation from that peeling process). I also saw some hydration benefits after using the second step but, personally, am still not fully convinced that there is much variation between the different colours. The effects for that claimed skin benefits are minimal.

That being said, I find the first two steps very unique. The bubbling mask is good in that it clears and brightens skin complexion without any dryness, which I usually expect from anything foamy. The second step is also a well balanced peel off mask (in effectiveness and gentleness), helping to clear out skin – this step is something that I would happily use 2-3 times a week. I wish that they sold tubs of the peel off mask alone because that is what I am most interested in and the three step kit is too expensive to use multiple times a week.

So, here’s the verdict!

SO WHAT IS IT?

A three step detox mask with a chrome finish peel off mask

THE GOOD

  • Clear instructions and easy to use
  • Very pretty
  • Innovative mask types
  • Detoxifies and clears clogged skin (good for people who wear a lot of make up)
  • Hydrates skin (no drying out)
  • Peel off mask is very effective but isn’t overly strong

THE BAD

  • Relatively expensive (USD$8.50 per mask)
  • Last step is rather underwhelming
  • Would prefer if these steps (especially the peel off mask) were sold individually
  • Results from the individual claimed benefits are minor – I don’t feel like there would be much difference between the types
  • Can be messy

RATINGS

  • APPLICATION | 4/5
  • HYDRATION | 4/5
  • DETOX/CLEARING SKIN | 5/5

OVERALL RATING? 7.5/10

WOULD I RECOMMEND?

I personally enjoyed using this mask and I would be using it again, mostly for the fun factor. I am crossing my fingers that they will sell the peel off mask individually soon because that really is my favourite type! The main downside to this, in my opinion, is the price. At USD$8.50, I wouldn’t mind using these for a special occasion but they would be too expensive to use often.

The mask types are also quick innovative and unique, so there are something that I would buy as presents – it’s a bit of fun. They are also gentle enough that I think they would be okay for sensitive skin too, though I do recommend checking all of the ingredients before you proceed.
