Review: Soft Airy UV Essence (Klairs)

Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence Sunscreen Kbeauty Review

I believe strongly in wearing SPF and will almost never go without it. However, because I have had allergic reactions to sunscreens in the past (which resulted in a not-so-fun afternoon at the Gold Coast wanting to scratch my thigh off) I am usually quite cautious with the types of products that I use. Adding in that I will hardly ever go without base make up, I also need skincare products that don’t interfere with the longevity of my foundation.

However, when I found out from Wishtrend that Dear Klairs was launching a new sunscreen, I wanted to give it a try! Partly because I needed to find an option that was more easily accessible (my go-to sunscreen is a Japanese Biore one that I can only get if someone I know or I go to Japan) and also because I have used their products before with great experiences.

Their products are generally also very well targeted for sensitive skin so, while I don’t usually have sensitive skin, this may be good for my (sometimes) SPF allergies. In addition to a product that doesn’t break me out, I am also looking for something lightweight that absorbs well into the skin and doesn’t cause foundation to apply patchy or break up. In general, I found that this sunscreen ticked all of those boxes and may be my new, more accessible alternative.

This sunscreen, the Soft Airy UV Essence is now available at Wishtrend (I received this as a pre-launch PR gift) for USD$23 and is part of their expanding Freshly Juiced Line – which I am a fan of.

love the holographic packaging of this range of Dear Klairs products, which I think is generally reserved for their freshly juiced range, and to be honest I wish that they would use this sort of approach for their other products too (and maybe use black so it’s easier for me to photograph).

The product comes in a white and foil holographic print box, which is very simple but actually feels like a pretty decent quality. I like that they’ve put sufficient thought into their packaging design – like the simple but enough slogan on the fold – as that makes it feel a little bit more high quality. It doesn’t feel like a high end or luxury product, but it doesn’t feel cheap.

Opening it up, the product comes in a white and silver squeeze tube that is made of a glossy finish soft plastic. The cap is silver and sort of clicks in place when you’re closing it, so the quality for this also feels great. All in all, good packaging that is simple and fuss-free, very well suited for the brand and escalates an affordable product into feeling relatively luxe.

This product is also Cruelty Free and Vegan Friendly – which is wonderful!

Product Description

This product was launched as part of their Freshly Juiced Line and, while I did think it was strange at first – I totally get it now. Although it is the only product that doesn’t use Vitamin C (I think), it is intended for use after using the other Freshly Juiced products to both shield your skin from UV rays (sun protection) and to enhance the effect of the vitamins.

This is a water-based sunscreen that is suitable for sensitive skin. It has a gel-like texture that gives a lightweight finish with no greasiness or white cast. It also contains these four key ingredients (taken directly from the Klairs Cosmetics website):

  • Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil (aka Sea Buckthorn Oil), in Korean cosmetic, the ingredient is listed as ‘Vitamin Tree Oil’ and it helps to supply the skin with moisture.
  • Tocopherol is an antioxidant that fights against free radicals found in the skin.
  • Panthenol, beta-glucan, and allantoin soothes, relieves skin irritations.
  • Niacinamide is a skin brightening agent and helps to brighten the overall skin tone.

This product is recommended for people with sensitive skin, those who want a light and non sticky sunscreen and who do not want a white cast after application (me, me and me).

Application & Personal Experiences

Since this product is marketed as having a gel-like texture, I was still a little surprised when I first dispensed it – it is almost opaque white and actually looks a little creamy. It holds it’s shape very well (i.e. is not liquidy) and I thought it might have just been another cream sunscreen. However, once you spread it out on your skin, you will definitely notice the gel-like texture.

This product has a semi-opaque appearance with a very lightweight gel finish. It feels very hydrating and a little bit thick actually (similar to my Neogen Serum), but is also easy to pat into the skin. It will mostly absorb into your skin leaving little to no white cast and a slight dewiness – enough to keep you looking fresh and hydrated, but without feeling heavy.

Overall, this is a nice sunscreen product and, after using it for a while, I have also not have any sensitivities to it (yay!) – it is a little bit thicker than the one I am currently using. It does moisturise and soothe the skin better, but this can feel a little excessive for people with oily skin. However, I think that this would also be very suitable for people with dry skin as there is no white cast to settle into dry areas and the product will hydrate without greasing up your complexion (especially right before make up).

So, here’s my verdict!

A gel-type lightweight sunscreen for sensitive skin

  • Simple but good quality packaging
  • Easily accessible and well priced
  • Hydrating formula that does not feel greasy
  • Pats easily into skin and absorbs well
  • No white cast
  • Lightweight finish that is suitable for use under make up
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Cruelty and vegan friendly

  • A little thicker than I’m used to
  • Might be too rich for oily skin

  • PACKAGING | 5/5
  • PRICE POINT | 4/5
  • TEXTURE | 4/5
  • HYDRATION | 5/5
  • ABSORPTION | 4/5

This product definitely got a good rating from me and I can’t actually find a way to criticise it! I think that is can be a little thicker than I’m used to using for my combination skin, but it still works for me. However, I would moreso recommend this product for dry to normal skin, as I feel it may be too hydrating for oily skin types.
