Review: Water Tint Balm (Choonee)

BB Cosmetics Review Kbeauty Beauty Asian Korean Cosmetics Skincare Choonee Lip Tint Balm

Choonee is a brand that I hadn’t heard of before but, looking at their Instagram, it seems like their lip tint balms are pretty popular. I’ve been on a search for the past few weeks to find a lip balm that had the colour intensity and consistency of a lipstick. Although I am still searching, I can safely say that this water tint balm is the closest I have gotten to it (as of yet).

BB Cosmetic had sent all three colours over to me for review and I would like to thank them for introducing me to a new brand. You can check them out by clicking the link below and don’t forget to use my code to get 8% off: QAL3F6ZA8YZ

The packaging for these tint balms are really cute. I’m guessing that the illustration is meant to be Choonee who, by their brand story, is a country girl who comes to Seoul and becomes ‘city chic’ by using the best, natural cosmetics. It’s a very cute story, though a little gimmicky, and I like that they tie it into their branding style. The illustration is also really pretty and I like that the tube is colour coded so they’re easy to find. Overall the packaging is simple but quiet sturdy. I’ve been carrying it around and it doesn’t open up in my bag.

The only thing that I don’t like about the packaging is that the illustration is basically a big sticker. This means that, over time, the paper will likely damage or peel off. Water submersion is also a no-go for the sticker, though I think the actual tube will handle it fine.

These are the three colours that they sent to me. Although the colour range is quite limited, I like that they are very pigmented and have a sheer finish, meaning that you can layer on the tint balm for a brighter effect. After reading some other posts, I found out that that’s actually the point of the balm. You reapply through the day to maintain the moisturising effect on your lips and, at the same time, you’re building up the colour.

Overall, I think that the red is the most wearable colour for me. The pink is nice but a little too light for my tastes. I usually really like an orange-ish tone but this one was a little too orange, though I think it would suit other skin tones better. I think it would look good layered on top of the red though (since, as I mentioned before, we can reapply to build colour).

As for hydration, I would say these have a medium hydration. They’re not bad but doesn’t last more than an hour or two, which is quite average for a balm, though the colour stays for much longer. If your lips are chapped though, the pigmentation will settle into your skin.

So, final thoughts?

SO WHAT IS IT?

A pigmented, sheer lip balm that also functions as a tint.

THE GOOD

  • Very pigmented
  • Sheer finish allows you to build up colour – can also mix layers of colour
  • Hydrating as a balm
  • Affordable
  • Sturdy and cute packaging

THE BAD

  • Sticker on the packaging can become damaged
  • Average lasting power
  • Limited colours

WOULD I REPURCHASE?

I think that I would repurchase the cherry colour, but I don’t think the pink and orange (peach and grapefruit) suit my skin tone. I might repurchase the orange to layer. It’s not mind-blowing but it’s very affordable though, so I might repurchase them to keep on hand. The colour is much better than the average lip balm. I hope that they bring out more colours in the future!
